O'Neil joined O'Neil took part in the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005 while the singer was still in high school. Her performance on the show impressed jury, and she was voted into the 100th round. O'Neil received praise of high quality from the judges. However, she suffered significant losses in the Top 10 and Top 9 weeks of the finals when she was voted in the bottom three spots and second-bottom two places and bottom two, respectively. Judges were amazed at her performance and advised viewers to choose contestants who sang well like Melissa. O'Neil did not make it to the bottom 3 again after numerous outstanding performance. The two other performances she gave on September 7, 2005, when O'Neil made it to the top two spots in the finals of the competition, Werner predicted that the morning papers would cover O'Neil's win over Rex Goudie in the finals. She became the 3rd Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil received a call shortly after her win from Canadian PM Paul Martin, congratulating on her victory on Canadian Idol.
